HISTORY OF NEEDLE LACE (OYA)
One of the most elegant examples of our traditional culture and craftsmanship, oya is a unique form of handmade lace. It serves not only as a decorative element but also as a means of communication, with the meanings and emotions it conveys. This technique, born from the fusion of floral and lacework art, is also considered a form of lace artistry.
The word oya has no direct equivalent in other languages, which suggests that this craft is unique to Turkish culture. The term oya, which means “to decorate,” further emphasizes this cultural connection.
According to the results of studies on some examples that have survived to the present day, oya became widespread especially in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. They are understood to be of high quality and originality in terms of technique, color, subject, material, and composition.
